Duchess' Bridge spans the estate at Buchanan Castle, Stirling, its nineteenth-century stones still catching carriage wheels and boot heels. The bridge is a road bridge, not a monument, which means it was built for crossing, not for being admired from a distance. Under that simple purpose lives the whole estate: water, grass, castle shadow and the women who gave it a name.
