Bryn Amlwg Castle stood on a prominent hill near the England-Wales border during the 12th and 13th centuries, using wood before stone to defend the tricky tripoint of Shropshire, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire. Archaeologists uncovered burning and structural changes that suggest the castle fell or was slighted during the Anglo-Welsh war of 1276-77, leaving only earthworks for later walkers to trace. The missing towers and gatehouse become easy to imagine when the hill still rises above the border valleys.
