Brunston Castle began as a Kennedy stronghold in 1569, though it may have stood much longer in shadow. Black Bessie lost it to Hamilton in a dispute of conflicting grants, and the family kept tenantry there through the centuries until the walls simply gave way. What remains is a half-gable and lower south wall, hidden by trees above the Water of Girvan, with the octagonal tower and courtyard pillars already gone when MacGibbon and Ross drew it. The castle did not dramaticaly fall; it was forgotten, mapped as Burntstone, then erased from later maps entirely.
