Mairi watched a black horse pull a cart through the stable doors at Brucklay Castle while rain erased the road behind them. The animal knew every stone, every hinge and every shadow in the dark block. She followed it without fear, certain that the castle had stopped being a castle and become a path for something stronger than memory.
