What is recorded here
Broughty Castle stands at the Arbroath harbour entrance, a pinnace built in the nineteenth century to mark the dangerous edge where the North Sea meets the land. It is not a home or a toy, but a warning written in stone, forcing every ship to respect the depth and width of the water before it enters. The castle still performs that job, turning a vague coastline into a place where distance, danger and direction become clear.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Broughty Castle: Arbroath Harbour Entrance, North Sea as Pinnace (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Broughty Castle, located at the entrance to Arbroath Harbour on the North Sea, was originally built in the 13th century, with significant later modifications, notably by the Earls of Angus in the 15th century. It is important as a key coastal stronghold in Scotland’s medieval defense network and for its association with historical conflicts, including the Wars of Scottish Independence.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
