Broncroft Castle on the Clee Hills near Tugford is a rare inhabited Shropshire castle whose two surviving towers still rise beside a circular ruin that may have been a dovecote or corner tower from the time of Roger Tyrell. Sir Simon Burley rebuilt it in the 1380s, and it later endured Civil War fighting, parliamentary demolition orders, patching, sale and near-total rebuilding by George Johnstone. The thin walls and odd windows suggest as much performance as defence, a private house dressed in the language of power.
