Brodick Castle Icehouse stands in North Ayrshire as a 19th-century icehouse, built to keep fish, meat or cream cold before electricity existed. Its thick walls and buried chamber turned winter ice into summer luxury for the castle kitchen. The structure still marks the ground where heat and hunger were defied with stone, shadow and patience.
