Helen's Bay in County Down, Ireland, is where Arthur Brian Deane Faulkner entered the world in February 1921, two months before Northern Ireland itself was born. That tiny difference in timing turned a local boy into the last man to hold the abolished Prime Minister office, forcing him to carry a dying institution through its final months. The sea air of that small coastal place seems to have prepared him for storms, whether political or personal, because he spent his life navigating waters that kept changing shape around him.
