Bratton Castle

Two massive ramparts still grip Bratton Down, enclosing twenty-three acres where Bronze Age and Iron Age people likely watched the valley below. The western defences climb thirty metres across stepped ditches, forcing any attacker upward through a narrow kill zone rather than around a wall. That much stone and earth suggests pride as much as fear, perhaps a local power displaying wealth while iron replaced bronze and old alliances collapsed. Walking the crest today, you can still feel the trap laid bare: a living landscape shaped by human hands into a weapon.
