The *Braer* was a Liberian-flagged oil tanker that ran aground on Garth's Ness, Shetland, Scotland, on January 5, 1993, during a severe storm. The ship spilled over 85,000 tonnes of crude oil, causing one of the worst environmental disasters in UK waters; no lives were lost, but the wreck and cleanup had significant ecological and economic impacts.
