Bowl barrow west of Castlegate Lane

Half a metre of earth still holds the bones of a Bronze Age person laid on limestone slabs with a pottery food vessel, waiting for the dead to eat in another world. Thomas Bateman broke open that chamber in 1851, scattered the mystery and named the shapes he could see. The rest remains buried above Hay Dale, intact beneath the plough marks and human impatience.
