Boverton Castle rose above a farming village in the Vale of Glamorgan after Robert Fitzhamon founded it during the 12th century, then Roger Seys rebuilt it into a large fortified manor around 1587. The Seys family occupied it through the 17th century before leaving it to decay, while local legend claims a tall shadowy woman in mourning clothes still haunts the ruined walls. That ghost story gives the ordinary village a sudden edge, as if the castle never fully let go of the people who built it.
