Bothwell Castle (new) stands in South Lanarkshire as a country house marked by drainage work and 13th-century pottery. The old clay may have belonged to kitchens, cellars or forgotten rooms, while the drains suggest the ground still fights to stay dry. A new structure beside such ancient material creates a strange bridge between ages, inviting wonder about how much of the old castle remains buried beneath the soil.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Bothwell, Bothwell Avenue, Bothwell Castle (new) as Country House (period Unassigned), Drain(s) (period Unassigned), Unidentified Pottery (13th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Bothwell Castle (new) was built in the 17th century, likely by the Maxwell family, who were prominent in the Bothwell area. The site is historically significant due to its association with the ancient and strategically important town of Bothwell, near the site of the older Bothwell Castle, which played a role in Scottish history, including the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, to Lord Darnley.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
