Bluecoat Hospital, Chester blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Bluecoat Hospital. This was the site of the medieval hospital of St. John the Baptist. The present building dating from 1717 was a charity school founded by Bishop Stratford in 1700 to house and educate poor boys. Bluecoat School with it's distinctive uniform, continued until 1949.

The Bluecoat Hospital in Chester originated as the medieval hospital of St. John the Baptist and later became a charity school founded in 1700 by Bishop Stratford to educate impoverished boys; the current building from 1717 is a notable example of Georgian architecture and served as an educational institution until 1949.
