The Blantyre High Cross and Blantyre Disaster Centenary Monument was built in 1977 to commemorate the centenary of the 1877 Blantyre mining disaster, one of Britain's worst mining accidents. It is a 20th-century commemorative monument dedicated to the 204 victims, particularly children, who died in the disaster, and serves as a local and national memorial to industrial tragedies.
