Blair Castle has guarded the Highland gateway for seven centuries, transforming from a seized medieval tower into a grand white palace where Bonnie Prince Charlie once stayed and British troops later left musket marks in the stone. The Atholls reclaimed that early fortification and expanded it into a celebrated home for Queen Victoria, whose 1844 visit officially recognised the Atholl Highlanders as Europe’s only legal private army. Today the estate still breathes with clan memory, its grand ballroom and sprawling gardens preserving the dramatic swing from feudal warfare to Victorian romance.
