Blackcastle Hill holds medieval and later rig and furrow marks, still visible in the Scottish Borders. The fields were cut and lifted repeatedly, shaping the hill for centuries before anyone wrote the shape down. That much repetition suggests people worked the land until it became familiar, even when the names and boundaries faded. The hill keeps the rhythm of that labour long after the tools went quiet.
