Blackcastle Hill holds the buried remains of a small domestic settlement in East Lothian, dating from prehistoric or early medieval times. It joined a scattered pattern of rural life across the Lothian region, where people adapted homes to local land rather than clustering into one large centre. The hill still belongs to that old human landscape, even when no building remains visible.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Blackcastle Hill as Settlement (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
