Black Castle

Black Castle in Killaree, County Kilkenny, rose beside a narrow stream to control a valley passage for the Rochford family until Cromwellian confiscations ended their tenure. Its nine-foot walls resisted time longer than most local strongholds, yet marsh water and neglect reduced the castle to a single thick wall trapped between derelict farm buildings. What remains is less a ruin than a disappearance: stone, memory and wet ground arguing over what should be forgotten.
