BIVALLATE RATH: LOUGHBRICKLAND FORT in Coolnacran

BIVALLATE RATH: LOUGHBRICKLAND FORT

What is recorded here

Loughbrickland Fort in Coolnacran is a bivalate rath, meaning two concentric rings of earth and stone instead of one. It belongs to the early Christian period and still carries scheduled protection in County Down. The double defence suggests a household proud enough to build twice, perhaps guarding a doorway, a treasury or a bloodline. People may have lived inside the inner ring while workrooms and byres filled the outer band, creating a small world complete enough to resist invasion or pride.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as BIVALLATE RATH: LOUGHBRICKLAND FORT. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
