What is recorded here

Birdoswald Roman Fort stands in Cumberland as one of the better-preserved forts on Hadrian's Wall, its stone foundations still marking the rectangular footprint where Roman soldiers lived, trained and watched the northern frontier. The surviving walls and gateways suggest a busy garrison place rather than a dead ruin: men hauling timber, lighting fires, arguing over rations and waiting for orders that may never have come. Much of the fort has vanished, but the visible remains keep the shape of daily Roman life intact, inviting visitors to imagine the noise, smell and urgency that once filled the courtyard.
Birdoswald Roman Fort is shown as a fort on the public map of Cumberland. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
Built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD, Birdoswald Fort was part of the Hadrian's Wall frontier system and served as a military garrison. It is important as a well-preserved example of Roman military architecture in northern Britain.
