Bernard John Dowling Irwin was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, on June 24, 1830, before crossing the Atlantic to become the first chronological recipient of the Medal of Honor. He rescued besieged soldiers from Apache warriors by tricking them into believing a small dragoon unit was a massive army, proving that cunning could outweigh numbers in the brutal Arizona wilderness.
