Borve Castle stands on Benbecula as a Chain Home Beam radar station built during the second world war. The defences needed a place high enough to see distant aircraft, so they chose the castle ruin and filled it with men, dials and wire. The castle had already lost one roof and most of its pride when the war gave it a new job.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Benbecula, Borve Castle, Chain Home Beam Radar Station as Radar Station (20th Century). The Chain Home Beam Radar Station at Borve Castle on Benbecula was constructed during World War II as part of Britain's early warning radar network. It is remembered for its role in coastal defense and the strategic importance of the site during the war.
