Beltrees is a possible medieval castle in Renfrewshire, Scotland, tied to the Sempill family and the turbulent court life of Mary, Queen of Scots. John Sempill, born around 1540 to Robert Sempill, 3rd Lord Sempill and Elizabeth Carlyle, moved through exile, legitimacy and service before marrying Mary Livingston in 1565. The castle may have hosted young lords, fleeing relatives and quiet negotiations, while Beltrees itself kept only the smallest trace of that noisy world.
