Bellister Castle (uninhabited parts)

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Mortons and other local families may have lived inside the castle before the uninhabited parts became a scheduled monument, but no surviving account names them or dates their departure. The castle still stands in Northumberland, its empty chambers preserving the shape of a household that stopped leaving warmth behind.
The National Heritage List for England records Bellister Castle (uninhabited parts) as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Bellister Castle was built in the 13th century by the powerful Percy family, who held significant influence in northern England. It is remembered for its strategic role in the defense of the region against Scottish raids and for its historical association with the Earls of Northumberland.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
