Bedford Castle was a large medieval fortress built after 1100 by Henry I inside the town, forcing older Anglo-Saxon streets to bend around its massive earthworks. King Stephen besieged it during the Anarchy, and Henry III later smashed it with 2,700 soldiers after Falkes de Bréauté defied the crown. Houses eventually swallowed the ruins, but the surviving motte still rises in an archaeological park, proving that even a destroyed castle can refuse to disappear completely.
