Beacon Hill Fort stands on the south west spur of Harwich Harbour, where a map drawn in 1534 already marked the proposed defences and building began by 1539. The hill has watched the sea through every continental war since, gaining a five gun battery in 1811, barracks and a hospital by 1845, and a newer battery in 1888. Men may have stood on that cliff in every age, listening for sails that never came or praying the ones they saw would turn away.
