Bawns are ancient defensive enclosures, often circular or kidney shaped, built with stone or earthworks. They may have housed families, stored grain or offered refuge during conflict. The exact location is missing, but the function remains clear. Somewhere in County Down, a bawn still stands or lies buried, waiting to be found.
