Bawn in Gortnaclea

Bawn

What is recorded here

Five storeys of stone still rise west of the Gully River, overlooking the flat land where a forgotten bawn wall once circled the tower. The wall is gone, but its ghost line remains marked in the earth, suggesting a enclosed world that no longer exists. The tower survived because height and distance gave it time. What the bawn protected, and who lived inside it, has vanished into the same silence that erased the wall.
In an elevated position West of the Gully River. A five storey tower house (LA023-016) with evidence of the line of a destroyed bawn wall to N and W of tower house. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
