What is recorded here

Mortars and bullets still mark the edge of Ballyutoag, though no memorial names the fighters or the date. The ground retains the shape of fear: a shallow ditch, a broken wall, a road that narrowed at the worst moment. Whatever happened there, it happened quickly and without witness. People young and old have lived beside the scar since, passing it without explanation. The absence of a marker does not erase the event; it returns the event to the body of the place, where memory works without permission.
