Covenanters led by General David Leslie defeated Royalist forces under James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, near Philiphaugh on 13 September 1645. The victory ended Montrose's successful campaign in Scotland and marked a turning point in the First Civil War, strengthening Covenanter control.
