What is recorded here

On 31 July 1689, Justin McCarthy, Viscount Mountcashel, led 3,000 raw Jacobite recruits into a Williamite ambush near Newtownbutler. Panic struck when the first shots fired, sending hundreds fleeing into Upper Lough Erne where they drowned rather than face the cavalry. McCarthy escaped with a wound and 400 captured officers, but the brutal sweep cleared western Ulster for the Duke of Schomberg's later landing.
