Earl Byrhtnoth and his English thegns fought Viking forces led by Olaf Trygvasson near Maldon, Essex, on 10 or 11 August 991. The English were defeated, and Byrhtnoth was killed, marking a significant setback for Anglo-Saxon resistance and encouraging further Viking raids.
