A battle between the forces of Prince Louis of France and the English barons loyal to the young King Henry III, fought in May 1217; the English won a decisive victory, halting Louis's campaign and marking a turning point in the First Barons' War; it helped secure the future of the royalist cause and the eventual settlement of the conflict under the terms of the Magna Carta.
