On 5 June 1646, exhausted Scottish Covenanters marched twenty-four kilometres into a kill zone, believing they were hunting a cautious foe. Instead, Owen Roe O'Neill met them on a rise above the River Blackwater with fresh muskets and longer pikes. The tired invaders charged, broke against unyielding ranks, and collapsed into the river loop where Confederate swords and scians finished what fatigue began. Two thousand Scots drowned or bled out while three hundred Irish walked away, ending dreams of religious conquest in Ulster.

The Battle of Benburb took place on 5 June 1646 during the Irish Confederate Wars, the Irish theatre of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. It was fought between the Irish Confederates under Owen Roe O'Neill, and an army of Scottish Covenanters and Scottish/English settlers under Robert Monro.
