Battle Abbey

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

The National Heritage List for England records Battle Abbey as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
William the Conqueror's forces defeated the Anglo-Saxon army led by King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; the Norman victory marked the beginning of Norman rule in England and had profound long-term effects on English language, law, and society. Battle Abbey was founded on the site of the battle to commemorate the event.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
