Bathgate Castle stands in West Lothian as a medieval castle and earthwork, its boundaries still marked though much of its structure has surrendered to time. The land may have been crowded with people, dogs, and arguments when the castle was new, but none of that life is recorded. What remains is a shape in the ground, waiting for someone to walk past it and imagine the hands that built it.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Bathgate Castle as Castle (medieval), Earthwork (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Bathgate Castle was built in the 14th century by the de Balliol family, later held by the Earls of Linlithgow. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the Scottish Lowlands and for its role in local feudal history.
