Bat's Castle: a small multivallate hillfort and associated outwork

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Bat's Castle is an Iron Age hillfort in Somerset where concentric earthworks still trace the shape of a defensible life. It may have been a seasonal camp, a territorial marker, or a refuge for people who read danger in the horizon. The outwork extends the perimeter like a second thought, as if the first circle was not enough to keep the world at a distance.
The National Heritage List for England records Bat's Castle: a small multivallate hillfort and associated outwork as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
