Barton Seagrave Castle is a misleading name for two separate moated enclosures west of the church, one holding a manor house and the containing later stone pits. Nicholas de Seagrave received Edward II’s licence to crenellate the dwelling, yet no stone remains, only water-worn earth, marshy ditches and disturbed islands. The greater castle may have been a room with towers, a kitchen, a garden and a deliberate boundary between household and field.
