Barrow

Barrow, unclassified

What is recorded here

Barrowhouse is the only part of Laois inside the Athy parish and Dublin diocese, a strange border anomaly where the River Barrow draws the county line. St. Mary’s church rose in 1831 after penal laws fell, replacing an older Tankardstown worship place, while the local school survived government closure because neighbours paid teachers directly. That stubborn care kept a small western bank community continuous through medieval mystery, religious restriction and modern bureaucratic forgetfulness.
Low subcircular mound of earth (max. basal dims N-S c. 9m; H 0.75m-1m) situated 120m SSW of ringfort (LA013:051002-) on W facing slope of hill. Not marked on any edition of OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
