Barrow

This monument is located in undulating, low-lying pasture NW of the Camoge river. The monument looks onto a broken circle of hills which surround the county from Foynes in the NW to Drumcollliher in the S and the Galty Mtns in the SE. It comprises a broken circuit of bank (Wth 5m, H 1m), inside of which is a silted-up fosse (Wth 4m, D 0.4m) giving the monument an overall diameter of c. 42m. There is a definite break in the E (Wth 2m). The bank either side of this is squared off and retained by a stone revetment (O'Kelly, 1944-5, 49). A Neolithic ring-barrow; likely dates to the Early to Middle Bronze Age. It represents a type of funerary monument associated with elite burial practices and social stratification in the prehistoric landscape.
