Barr Castle stands as a plain stone rectangle on a low ridge above Lochwinnoch, built in the fifteenth century and abandoned by the Hamiltons in the eighteenth. Its walls still hold the faint shape of a kitchen fireplace and a flat-ceilinged hall, suggesting a household that valued warmth and clarity over grand display. The missing turrets and vanished courtyard leave a hole in the picture, but the remaining mass proves the castle was never meant to be pretty, only permanent.
