Barr Castle stands as a plain stone rectangle on a low ridge near Lochwinnoch, built in the 15th or early 16th century and abandoned by the Hamiltons of Ferguslie in the late 18th century. Its walls still hold the memory of low vaulted ceilings and a flat-roofed hall, while the missing corner turrets leave the top edge jagged against the sky. The castle does not perform grandeur; it simply waits, heavy and quiet, with the initials of Margaret Hamilton and John Wallace carved above the door like a name forgotten by everyone but the stone.
