Barcaldine Castle is a 16th-century tower house on the south shore of Loch Creran, built by Sir Duncan Campbell to display wealth rather than resist invasion. Its dark fame comes from the claim that it detained Maclan of Glencoe before the Massacre of Glencoe, though that remains a story rather than a proven fact. The Campbells later abandoned it for a newer house, lost the estate, and let it decay into ruin before returning to restore it as a luxury residence.
