Bannachra Castle is a badly ruined tower house on a wedge shaped promontory overlooking the Fruin Water and Loch Lomond, held by the Galbraiths in the 15th century before passing to the Colquhouns in 1523. The Colquhouns kept the place into the 18th century, and local story says their chief was assassinated there in 1592, after which MacFarlane attackers burned the castle and it was never reoccupied. The surviving walls are so broken that the building could be a later lairds house rather than a true tower, yet the hidden promontory still suggests a family home built to watch the water and resist its neighbours.
