Balvenie Castle is one of Scotland’s oldest stone castles, built in the latter half of the 13th century by the ‘Black’ Comyns and later held by the ‘Black’ Douglases and Stewarts. Its massive curtain wall still dominates the site, while ruined domestic buildings mark the Douglas phase and the Atholl Lodging shows the Stewart Renaissance transformation. The castle passed between mighty families through alliance, forfeiture and royal favour, leaving layers of power visible in its remains.

Balvenie Castle was built by the Comyn family in the 13th century and later held by the Gordon family. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with key medieval Scottish noble families and is located near the site of the Battle of Balvenie in 1396.
