Balthayock Castle is a late-14th-century tower house east of Perth whose walls are nearly ten feet thick, built to keep Blair blood alive through war and captivity. James Maclaren rebuilt the ruined top in 1870, giving the old block a crown, roof and outside stair while preserving its massive stone heart. The empty chambers still smell of distance, as if waiting for the last resident to return from a walk beyond the barmkin.
