St Sunniva's Chapel at Balta is associated with St Sunniva, a 6th-century Irish saint and one of the early Christian missionaries to Scotland. Local tradition links the site to healing practices, and holy wells near such chapels were often believed to possess curative properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin.
