Balmoral Castle and its attached cafeteria and accommodation block stand in Aberdeenshire as a twentieth-century residence and eating hall, not a medieval fortress or a public museum. The castle chamber, kitchen tables and bedroom corridors may have hosted royal guests, household staff and ordinary visitors, but no public entry or official function is recorded.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Balmoral Castle, Cafeteria and Accommodation Block as Cafe (20th Century), Residential Building (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Balmoral Castle itself was built for Prince Albert in 1856 by the architect William Smith, and it became a favored retreat for the British royal family. The Cafeteria and Accommodation Block are 20th-century additions, reflecting the castle's ongoing use as a royal residence and visitor site.
