Balloch Castle is a 19th-century country house built in 1808 for John Buchanan of Ardoch, who stripped the older 1238 castle of the Earls of Lennox to raise its walls. The old fortress vanished into the new mansion, leaving only a mound and a moat depression beside the loch where medieval danger once lived. Buchanan signed Glasgow Ship Bank notes inside the rooms, while later owners shaped the grounds into a public park. The castle still stands as a layered marker of local memory, bridging medieval loss and modern enjoyment.
